Vehicle registration plates of the European Union
A European vehicle registration license plate include numberic or alphanumeric code that ID the vehicle within the issuing region's database. All license plates in the European Union follow a standard format - white or yellow plates with black charachters and the plate is longer horizontally than it is tall vertically. The Netherlands, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom use yellow plates at the rear and white at the front. The most common design for EU license plates consists of a blue strip on the left side. This strip has the European Union flags symbol - the 12 yellow stars on blue, along with the country code of the state that the car is registered. The oval nationality stickers that you may see were expected to be displayed in the rear of cars that are driving in other countries. Now that the EU plates have become more standardized this oval decal is not required.
